UPDATES

Sidewalks:  Lorraine attended the meeting of the Sidewalk Committee and a discussion was held about a sidewalk on N.E. 60th Street.  Deirdre discussed the recent School District action involving the School Walk Route on N.E. 80th Street.  Deirdre asked the Executive Committee for a letter of support requesting a sidewalk on the south side of N.E 80th Street, from 122nd near the Lake Washington High School to the City limit.  Deirdre will send a draft to Bruce and the Committee to review.

Dogs & Parks Committee:  This committee recommended Snyder’s Corner as a possible off-leash dog park in their presentation to City Council.  This subcommittee of the Park Board recommended uses for dogs in all the parks in City:  five where dogs would be off-limits, five where there would be mixed uses for dogs, and ten where separate dog areas could be fenced.  They raised the idea of restricted hours for dogs/people in parks.  It was noted that parks are becoming more heavily used.  A study session will be held on April 20th.  More information is being requested.

Signs:  Bruce mentioned there is a woman in neighborhood can produce signs for the Neighborhood Association if we digitally submit what we need.

REPORTS

N.A. PROPOSED 2004 BUDGET

Business Cards:  It was agreed the cards look great.  Jeanette to look into business card paper, supplies, and get prices.

Meeting refreshments:  Dana and Rhoda to submit invoices for the general membership meetings.

Copying expenses:  A new newsletter format has been developed by Andy Held and could be printed in black and white to reduce costs.  Andy to work with Bill on the flyer and coordination of mailings.  The Executive Committee will provide flyer input.

March N.A. Meeting Notification:  An email notification will be sent to the neighborhood association membership, with a hardcopy being mailed to those on the N.A. roster but without an email address.

SRHBTNA Meeting Signs:  Arrangements were made to have all the N.A. meeting notice signs put out for the March meeting.

NWLink:  Forwards N.A. email to the neighborhood membership.  If you are not receiving these, please contact Bill Anderson.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Resignation:  Director Jim McElwee submitted his letter of resignation, which was accepted by the Executive Committee.  The Committee thanked Jim for his participation and contribution to the Executive Committee.

Appointment:  It was moved and unanimously approved to appoint Andy Held to fill the remainder of the unexpired term of Mr. McElwee, pending Andy’s agreement.

KAN:  The Kirkland Alliance of Neighborhoods is hoping to have two representatives from each neighborhood.  Jim McElwee agreed to continue on in that capacity.  Jim will serve alongside with Ken Nelson as SRHBT KAN representatives.  Ken will give the reports at the N.A. meetings.  KAN is pursing voter turnout (registration will be part of that) with an initiative called, “Kirkland Cares, Kirkland Votes.”  KAN also recently had a discussion of business/neighborhood relations.

Urban Forester:  The City Arborist, Elizabeth Walker, is creating a City-wide census of trees, and as of now, has mapped trees from the northern City border down to N.E. 85th Street.

City Board and Commissions:  It was suggested to announce openings on Boards and Commissions to the N.A. membership as they occur.

Totem Lake Transit Center:  Transit/HOV Interchange Open house was held by the City/Sound Transit.  Initial impressions were that it would be bicycle friendly.  More information will be shared as it becomes available.

Neighborhood Sign:  The City of Kirkland will provide one neighborhood sign and the suggested location is at N.E. 70th Street and 132nd Avenue N.E.

MARCH GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING:  Possible agenda items include:

Centennial 2005:   The Heritage Foundation has an entertaining and informative presentation by a person dressed as Peter Kirk.  They have developed an interesting program (10 – 15 minutes) which they have offered to present to our N.A. at our general membership meeting.  This year, the Fourth of July parade will have a Centennial theme.  While Centennial activities are being proposed for downtown, it was suggested to have Neighborhood festivities included.

SRHBTNA Picnic:  At the March meeting there will be a discussion and a call for volunteers.  SRHBT to ask chairs of other neighborhood associations what they do for their picnics.  It was agreed that the Methodist Church would be a great location because the N.A. enjoys/appreciates their facility.  It is where we hold our meetings, has good parking, has restrooms, has a good playground, and has nice open areas.  The Church also has a patio area on the South end of building where food can be set food outside on a long buffet near a power source.  Bruce will call the Church to reserve use for Saturday, August 28th.  There will be a brainstorming session to get ideas on the menu (potluck?) or donations?  Other neighborhood associations have been very successful in soliciting local business donations.  (The Juanita N.A. had booths donated by several businesses.)  Initial ideas of whom to invite to participate included DQ, Bridle Trails Market, Starbucks, Tully’s, SBC, etc.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
