Announcements
·
Imeria
announced she is moving to Gig Harbor.
When she is closer to departing we will announce an open position for
the board. We thanked Imeria for all of her hard work for the neighborhood.
Updates
- Natural Resources Plan- The plan was approved by Council in July
- Off Leash Area- Barb and Bruce represented our neighborhood in conversations with
the city regarding use of the Santana area for an off-leash area. The
board discussed several issues including dust, noise, parking and
traffic. We need to remind Barry
Russell that the NA did not give our approval to the plan, just to a plan
to study the potential.
- Planning Commission Vacancy- Planning Commission Vacancy:
Should Jessica be elected to the City Council, our neighborhood
association has an interest in finding and supporting a strong
neighborhood replacement on the commission.
- Ben Franklin School- The plan will be further discussed at a
meeting in August.
- NE 85th-
- NE 124th Intersection. Sound
Transit will have another meeting on August 25 to discuss the status of
the 85th transit plans. We have given conditional support
based upon commitments for sidewalks on 85th and median
islands. WE are working closely with the NRH neighborhood.
- Honda-
has submitted a private amendment request to an August 14 meeting of the
planning commission. We will reiterate our position against encroachment
into the neighborhood. There will be an August 21 meeting with
Honda. Steve suggested that Honda
has been a good neighbor overall. We need to determine whether approval
of the expansion would ‘set a precedent’. Jessica said that
both the NE 85th Street
Corridor Plan and the North Rose Hill
Neighborhood Plans state that there will be no
further commercial creep into residential areas. A precedent that allowing the
Honda expansion will set is that neighborhood plans are not taken seriously nor
followed.
- Bruce
suggested a get together with NRH to establish an action team for the
corridor. He will contact NRH.
- Traffic Calming- Don
reported that the traffic committee is somewhat stalemated on the issue of
physical devices. The group agreed
that developing a traffic calming plan is important for the neighborhood
and was supportive of going forward with a plan. Don was authorized to
make a presentation at the September meeting with Doug Love to discuss the
tradeoffs. Don will also contact
Ellen McMahon of the city to discuss conducting a neighborhood
survey. He will also prepare a
draft plan that does not include speed humps. Other ideas suggested include starting
with arterial speeding (e.g. speed radar signs) and perhaps focus on a
smaller area for initial treatment of traffic calming.
- Walking Juanita- Ken announced a new brochure done for Juanita
with the Neighborhood Connections grant funds.
Actions
- Grant-
The board passed a motion supporting a request for the 2004 grant. The
likely use would be for mailings, but the potential use for the funds will
be readdressed later.
- Letters-
Approved letter support for sidewalks on NE 80th by Elementary
School; City proposal to American Planning Association for Community
Conversations- provide our input on the city’s good intentions and
commitments. Bruce will write.
- KAN Meeting- Ken Nelson
will substitute for Jim McElwee at the September KAN meeting
- Candidates Night- Bruce will talk to NRH about volunteering to
host.
- Point of Contact List- Update on web site with links to key
city staff and council. Bill Anderson?
- Neighborhood Process for approving ‘position
statements’- Bruce and
Don will send out procedures that the board discussed a few months ago.
Agenda for September
- Monorail Report- Heidi Schorr
- NE 85th – Try to get Janice Stoloff of the planning
department.
- Downtown Action Team- limit the time allotted.
- Reports- Traffic calming, sidewalks (Sept 16)
The meeting adjourned at
9:10 PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
Donald Samdahl
