It's that time of year again - the Neighborhood Safety Program (NSP) process for 2026 has just started, and we need your ideas! The NSP funds $350,000 of pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements throughout the city each year. The projects are all submitted by Neighborhood Associations, so this is a great opportunity for us to raise safety issues in our neighborhood to the City and advocate they be addressed. Common projects include visibility improvements, lighting, crosswalk improvements, traffic calming, bike improvements, and signage.
The deadline for us to submit ideas to the City is December 1st, but earlier is better. Once all of the ideas are collected, I will work with City Staff until February to determine feasibility and design, finally selecting 2 projects which cost up to $75,000 each. The applications from each neighborhood will then be ranked to determine which get funding, and will be approved by City Council in the Spring. Hopefully one of our ideas will be selected again this year.
There's a lot of ground to cover in our neighborhood, which is why we need your insight and ideas! You don't need to have a specific solution in mind; we can start with just identifying what the safety concern is. Please email me with any ideas you have. We can set up a phone call or meeting from there, if needed. I do have the list of ideas I received last year, but please feel free to re-submit any ideas you had last time, as well as new ones.

In March, King County Solid Waste decided to site the NERTS at the location of the current Houghton Transfer Station. However, the City of Kirkland has filed an appeal for both the EIS and the siting decision. Basically, asserting that the EIS was inadequate, and therefore the siting decision is invalid, with the hopes that a more complete EIS will lead to a different siting decision. Friends of Taylor Field have also filed a separate appeal.
You can view the EIS here
You can also view letters sent to the Neighborhood Association here.
If the siting decision is maintained, the Neighborhood Association will seek to be very active in the site design process, and in asking for mitigations and improvements near the site.
Our project for improving the gravel path on the east side of 132nd Ave NE between NE 66th St and NE 70th Pl (Old Redmond Road) has been approved by the Kirkland city council! 2025 projects will be posted for bids in 2026 for construction in 2027.
Send your news to info@rosetrails.org so that we can post it here!
